Real Madrid will face Galatasaray in the 33rd edition of the Santiago Bernabeu Trophy. Jose Mourinho’s team will defend their title this year after defeating teams from Uruguay, Penarol.

This event aims to commemorate the former president of Real Madrid, Santiago Bernabeu. Friendship tournament is always held every year at the beginning of the season. This event has been running since 1979, when Madrid alone has collected 21 trophies.

Galatasaray will become the first Turkish club to participate in this pre-season competition. Galatasaray disappointing last season in the Turkish league with the only ranked eighth, but immediately did a massive overhaul to bring in a lot of quality players such as Felipe Melo, Fernando Muslera, Tomas Ujfalusi and Engin Baytar and Emmanuel Eboue of Arsenal.

Real Madrid and Galatasaray have faced three times in European club competition. Their first match in the European Super Cup in 2000, when the Turkish team won thanks to goals in extra time around.

They faced each other again a year later in the quarter-finals of the Champions League in 2001. Galatasaray won the first leg 3-2 in Istanbul, but the Los Blanco to the next round 3-0 thanks to a landslide victory at the Santiago Bernabeu.
